Chrissie Hynde - one of the boys or femme fatale? Provocateur or force of nature? Tremulous alto or ultimate rock & roll chick? Woman of the world or bandleader? How about all of them? Since forming the Pretenders three decades ago, Hynde has proven to be a one-of-a-kind tough-minded, outspoken and an utterly uncompromising artist - yet also capable of moments of heart-wrenching tenderness. Hynde has recorded just nine studio albums since the original Pretenders lineup cranked out their barrier-smashing debut in 1980 and Break Up the Concrete is but the second album to bear the Pretenders nameplate in a decade. That makes the arrival of any new Pretenders album something of an occasion and even outright celebration. Throughout the dozen songs on Break Up the Concrete, Hynde brings the trademark cool and much of the heat of the early Pretenders albums to a richly American setting. None of the five musicians who comprise this set of Pretenders has recorded with her before - but they take to her songs like they've been waiting all their lives for this moment. Legendary drummer Jim Keltner needs no introduction. HYNDE “I met Jim when we toured with Neil Young and dreamed of working with him ever since. Martin Chambers is the worlds most entertaining rock drummer that’s for sure, but Keltner is an alchemist, a magician. I wanted a different groove on this album and Martin had no problem letting Jim take over for the project. Although Martin will be with us when we go on the road.” The rest of the crew collectively represents something dynamic and fresh . Added to this is Concrete showing Hynde in peak form as a singer, engaged as a writer and performing with the same vitality and intimacy of the classics she penned years ago.

- HILL COUNTRY REVUE
File Under: Rock, Blues
NB: SRO – Tickets on Sale August 1
Doors at 7:00pm, Show at 9:00pm
$16 adv, $19 at door
JJ Grey & MOFRO's Alligator debut, COUNTRY GHETTO (produced by Dan Prothero) features 12 original JJ Grey compositions that come right out of the Southern musical and literary tradition. Grey's ear for detail inhabits his songs, whether it is a story passed down to him from his grandmother or the tribulations of a childhood friend. His voice delivers them with an unflinching strength that makes the personal universal and paints a vivid portrait of an exact time or place with words and music. Like his songs, his rich, soulful vocals are forceful and commanding, seemingly old beyond his years. And the music, from smoldering soul ballads to gospel-fried funk to straight ahead rock n' roll, brings it all home with danceable grooves and a melodic freshness that will stay with you long after the album ends.

Marc Brownstein: "What's really cool about Electron now is we went back and played the opera The Chemical Warfare Brigade, and it wasn't really electronic. It went back to rock. It has come full circle. We started out as a rock band and infused electronic elements into it. Obviously with the Biscuits that's still a big part of our show, and then when we went out and did side-projects for the weekend, and Electron was all rock again. It is just cool to go one night to the next and be able to live so comfortably in so many genres and have people react so positively to it."

Locksley is: Jesse and Jordan Laz, Kai Kennedy and Sam Bair. We were all friends in Madison, Wisconsin growing up and moved to New York because, you know, if you can make it there… In just over a year since self-releasing our first album we’ve toured the UK, Japan and the US with some great bands, including The Hives, the Rapture, Hanson and Rooney, to name a few. We’ve sold over 50,000 albums worldwide, performed on Jimmy Kimmel and Conan O’Brien in the States and had our songs featured in movies, television and advertisements. Everything we’ve accomplished so far has been as an unsigned artist. We’re unsigned partially by choice, partially by circumstance. But luckily the 21st century has made it easier for an unsigned band to find success. That’s where you lot come in.
