Gibney Dance
October 26–28 at
Lower Manhattan’s Gibney Dance: Agnes Varis Performing Arts Cente

Gibney Dance Company is set to perform the New York premiere of Gina Gibney’s Drafting Foresight—with music by Ezekiel Honig, projection by Joshue Ott, and costume design by Felicity Sargent—and a new work by Shannon Gillen of VIM VIGOR DANCE COMPANY entitled, PASTORAL, created for and with the Company. These shows take place October 26–28 at Lower Manhattan’s Gibney Dance: Agnes Varis Performing Arts Center—see below for ticketing and event details.

Of her new work Gibney says, “Drafting Foresight has come to life this fall through the beautiful work of our Artistic Associates and collaborators. It has been wonderful to work for the first time with Ezekiel Honig—a musician who’s hypnotic work has long captivated me—and to continue to explore new directions with collaborators Joshue Ott and Felicity Sargent. The work also features Senior Company Director Amy Miller, honoring our long-standing collaboration and artist partnership.”

“The process to develop PASTORAL has delivered us into the complexities of intimacy,” says Gillen of the evening’s second work. “As this is the first project integrating new members into Gibney Dance Company, their experience of getting to know one another has influenced the direction and tone of the piece—bringing both the sublime power of anonymity and the soft underbelly of revealing something true about yourself.”

The Company also welcomes three new members, known as Artistic Associates: Zui Gomez, Katie Lake, and Tyler Schense. They join Senior Company Director Amy Miller and newly appointed Co-Director Nigel Campbell for the Company’s 2017-18 season. Gibney Dance Company members are given the title of Artistic Associate because they are involved full-time in a broad spectrum of activities both in and out of the studio, including work with survivors of domestic violence through the Community Action program, Advocacy Fellowships addressing issues in the performing arts field and more.

An Opening Night Reception will be hosted on October 26 with opportunities to meet the new Artistic Associates, and stay after the show for a talk back with Gina Gibney and the Artistic Associates of Gibney Dance Company: Campbell, Gomez, Lake, Miller and Schnese. Shannon Gillen’s PASTORAL

Saturday, October 28 at 4 p.m.
Tickets $15–$20
Studio H at Gibney Dance: Agnes Varis Performing Arts Center (enter at 53A Chambers Street)
Performed by: Nigel Campbell, Zui Gomez, Amy Miller, Tyler Schnese
Gina Gibney’s newest work, Drafting Foresight, explores the impact of interactions and relationships over time, and how pivotal moments in our lives ripple into the present. How do interactions become memories, and how do our memories shape who we are? With music by Ezekiel Honig, projection by Joshue Ott, and costume design by Felicity Sargent. Drafting Foresight was created in collaboration with GroundWorks DanceTheater and premiered at the Allen Theater in Cleveland, Ohio in March 2017.

Shannon Gillen’s PASTORAL looks at life-like environments as potent carriers of modern feeling, where reality is amplified, reduced, or otherwise altered by human engineering. With bodies juxtaposed against a fabricated landscape, characters are at once made more and less real by their surroundings, allowing unsettling thresholds between natural, unnatural, real, and unreal to become blurred. Drawing from VIM VIGOR’s signature dance theater aesthetic, the certainty of what is authentic will be shattered in a physical commotion of flesh, plastic, hair, electricity, metal, and breath.
