It was a hot week in June and the Urbanworld Film Festival was back for its ninth year and it was just the thing for hot New Yorkers - a chance to go inside and see hot films in a cool environment. Urbanworld is sponsored by HBO and MTV2 and this year they screened some seventy-one films. And according to the press release, “It is the largest internationally competitive festival dedicated to the exhibition of independent cinema by and about people of color.”

Here are some of the hot items featured in the 2005 festival (also from the press release):

  • Opening Night Premiere of Roll Bounce, directed by Malcolm D. Lee and starring Bow Wow, Mike Epps and Nick Cannon (Chi McBride, Wesley Jonathan, Megan Good, Charlie Murphy);
  • Closing Night Premiere of Hustle & Flow, produced by John Singleton, directed by Craig Brewer, and starring Terrence Dashon Howard, Anthony Anderson and Ludacris; (see the www.newyorkcool.com review in the film section.
  • World Premiere of Animal, starring Ving Rhames and Terrence Dashon Howard;
  • Special Screening of Constellation, featuring Hill Harper, Gabrielle Union and Billy Dee Williams;

In addition to feature films, Urbanworld showcased documentaries, short documentaries and music videos. This year all the screenings were held at Loews 34 th Street Theaters (the location last year’s screenings). The opening and closing night premieres were at the Magic Johnson/Loews Theaters on 125 th Street in HarlemFor more information, visit www.urbanworld.org.

Tanya Lewis Lee, Malcom Lee and Crystal McCrary

On opening night, New York Cool photographer Angelo Rivera was on hand for the opening of the skater Movie, Roll Bounce. There he photographed: Bow Wow (rapper/actor): Eddie Murphy’s brother Charlie Murphy and his family; Brandon T Jackson; some of the talented skaters featured in the movie: and the director of the film, Malcolm Lee, with Tanya Lewis Lee and Crystal McCrary. Here is a cool fact: Tanya Lewis Lee is Spike Lee’s wife and Tanya and Crystal are the co-authors of The Gotham Diaries, an expose of the upper echelons of New York's African American society. Cool!
